Life is full of ups and downs; work is no different. Recently I was in a situation that was one of the hardest falls of my career.
I’ve been working on positioning myself to take on certain responsibilities for the last year. It turns out that I positioned myself correctly, but to the wrong person. The decider happened to have different criteria.
So I got the news from my boss that I was being passed up. It was a hard blow to my ego and, I thought, to my career. After a number of hours of thought I worked through my emotions and decided that the right action would be to continue despite the setback. So that’s what I decided to do.
Lo and behold, the next day I found that my boss had gone to bat for me. I didn’t get everything that I wanted, but I did get a significant part of it.
You never know what the future holds. The turnaround in this instance was much quicker than usual. Sometimes things improve, sometimes they don’t, but the important thing is to never give up.
I have no idea if things will improve in the future. Since that incident, some things have been positive and some have been negative. I’ll fight on through the setbacks and rally in the progress.
